Shangrila Lake is a famous tourist location in the northern portion of Pakistan. This splendid lake is located just 25 Km away from Skardu at an elevation of two,500 m. The name of this lake comes from the Chinese word Shangri La which implies “Heaven on Earth”.
What is so remarkable about this wonderful lake, the crystal clear and sparkling water which gives an ultimate view of the surrounding location in their reflection. There are some luxury cottages with gorgeous red shades constructed along the lake bed. The lush green meadows which are complete of flowery gardens and the fruit laden orchids are also spectacular characteristics of the Shangrila Lake. There is also an additional heart shaped lake in Shangrila recognized as Kachura lake. Newlywed couples specially come to check out this heavenly spot and it is also known as a well-liked honeymoon destination in Pakistan.
The initial Resort Hotel in Skardu, Baltistan was opened at Shangrila in 1983. Shangrila Resort Hotel was founded by the late Brig.(Retd) Muhammad Aslam Khan, the very first commander of the Northern Scouts of the Pakistan Army. Shangrila Lake, the Heaven on Earth was named right after a book titled “Lost Horizon” by James Hilton. In the novel, the author narrates a tale in which an airplane crash landed close to a riverbed, in the early 1920’s.
