Maulana Jalal-u-Din Rumi started the Sema Ritual which is a pure Sufi meditation practice with a theme of remembering the Almighty. Sema is also pronounced as “Sama” which signifies “listening” and this practice insinuates the anagogic and mystical journey of man’s spiritual ascent through mind and adore to perfection. The researchers have interlinked the Sufi whirling with the scientific rule of revolving. The wonderful Sama ritual of whirling dervishes wearing special dresses is a symbol of Sufism which was declared by UNESCO as one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The whirling dervish or Samazen, intentionally and consciously participates in the shared revolution of other beings.
The performers are usually recognized as whirling Dervishes who belong to the Mevlevi order in Turkey. This tradition is preserved and continued since the thirteenth century in Turkey and several Dervishes can be observed spinning about and doing “Zikr” which is the recitation of devotional Islamic prayer. This is nowadays one of the main tourist attractions in Turkey. The whirling dervishes also present the gift of eulogy to the final Messenger “Prophet Mohamed (PBUH)” and the all Prophets ahead of him, who brought the message of God to humans.
The wonderful Sama ritual of whirling dervishes signifies meditating on God by way of focusing on melodies and dancing. At times the ritual is also accompanied with singing and narrating the Sufi poetry. The Dervishes stay silent and nonetheless, and controlled throughout the ceremony, unless wajd happens.
