A warrior horseman having a spear in his hand, with a triumphant passion more than a lion was carved centuries ago in the Shumen region of Bulgaria. It became well-known with the name of Madara Rider and the name Madara was derived from Madara which was a sacred place for worship in Bulgaria before 9th century A.D. It was the era of the 1st Bulgarian Empire when Christianity was not spread in Bulgaria.
According to the archaeological analysis the Madara Rider was carved on a flat rock in 710 A.D. Who carved the Madara Rider and to whom it was attributed ? It has remained a large curiosity and mystery for the historians. According to the most beliefs this rock relief was inscribed to symbolize the victory more than the enemy and to epitomize the may of the ancient nomadic Bulgarian tribes of that time.
The present consensus is on Khan Tervel who saved the then Bulgarian area from the Arab invaders. Madara Rider is accompanied with an eagle and a dog and penetrating the body of the lion with his spear. The most astonishing factor about the Madara Rider is its inscription, on 23 meters above the ground level in an virtually vertical 100 meter higher cliff. A partially preserved text in Medieval Greek, is also engraved in the rock via which the archaeologists have extracted the history of that occasions.
Madara Rider of Bulgaria is a single of the most interesting historical mysteries. This wonderful monument was also added in the Planet Heritage List of UNESCO in 1979. Madara Rider with its majestic pose is a distinctive symbol of the pride of the ancient Bulgars.
